Ipswich Grammar School was established in 1863 as Queensland’s first secondary school with the additional honour of being the first Grammar School in the State. Just sixteen boys attended on that first day; a number which has grown to be well over a thousand today. The original school building, known as the Great Hall, has been lovingly restored and still stands today as a monument to over 150 years of educating boys.

While we are a truly innovative and global school, our traditions and past are an important part of life at Ipswich Grammar. Traditions like the boys ringing the school bell on their last day of Year 12, just as they did on their first day of Year 8, help to celebrate and keep the School’s spirit alive.

Once the boys don the red and white stripes, they are IGS Old Boys for life. The experiences and friendships they take with them from their days here will remain with them forever.
