Junior School (Prep-Year 6)

At Ipswich Grammar School, we understand that children have unique personalities, learning styles, interests, and social and academic needs. As a result, our curriculum at the primary level combines strong classroom programs with individual student programs so the boys enjoy coming to school and have a positive attitude towards education. They feel valued, safe, and confident, with a supportive pastoral care system headed by the classroom teacher.

We strive to deliver a structured, sequential and skills-based curriculum consistently across Prep to Year 6 using research-based pedagogy. Explicit Teaching techniques are utilised to embed student knowledge and understanding from short term to long term memory. Our students are intentionally challenged through exposure to next level content in accelerating mastery in learning. Furthermore, we use higher order thinking skills for application in wide-ranging contexts. Assessment and data are essential elements in our approach to inform and refine our teaching practice to maximise student outcomes.

These fundamentals are further enhanced through a varied program including the Arts, Science, STEAM, Humanities and Languages to assist boys develop a wide range of skills while enjoying the challenges of new experiences. Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care at IGS is integral in enabling our boys to develop a strong sense of belonging and connection as a student, peer, role model, and part of the larger community. Every boy is nurtured and supported by exceptional teachers and staff who will help them to develop to their full potential. In Junior school, pastoral care is delivered and monitored by their classroom teachers and support staff. In Senior school, a Head of Year (HOY) is appointed to each year level. Where possible, the HOY moves with the same cohort of secondary boys each year, encouraging a strong and dedicated relationship with each student and his family to monitor not only their academic progress, but also their social and emotional wellbeing. A dedicated School Counsellor provides additional expert support and guidance to all boys at IGS, offering both proactive care alongside the management of issues arising from time-to-time across the school community.

In the Junior School we utilise the “You Can Do It!” program to enhance wellbeing. The boys investigate what it means to be resilient, act with honour, and belong to IGS. More specifically, the boys learn how to regulate their emotions and get along together even though they may have different interests, personalities, and backgrounds. The program seeks to instil confidence, develop life skills, and grow important personal skills in the boys. As they transition into the Secondary School, the boys start to develop important strategies to help them cope with feelings of worry and anxiety while keeping them engaged in activities like camps and adventure days to develop positivity and happiness.

The move to Secondary School is an exciting time where students look forward to new friendships, new adventures, and greater independence. We respect the maturity levels of our students as they continue on their journey from being boys to becoming young men. The academic program is intellectually challenging and empowers young men to learn and grow. A supportive environment with a broad offering of subjects, structured literacy programs and enrichment activities assists students in productive learning. The curriculum is learner centred, collaboratively organised, flexibly structured, and well resourced. Through cross-curricular initiatives, structured reading strategies, writers' camps, literacy competitions, and workshops, boys become interested readers and confident and skilled communicators.

The curriculum builds on approaches to learning developed in Junior School. Years 7, 8 and 9

Through the middle years of Secondary School, the Explicit Teaching instruction underpins the core subjects of English, Literacy Conventions and Mathematics. At Ipswich Grammar School we place these foundational subjects at the very core of our Academic program and a significant amount of the weekly lessons are allocated to these subjects along with Science.

Pastoral Care

In the Secondary School we customise topics to suit the needs of our boys for each year level/life stage. In Term 1 of a Year 7 – 12 journey, boys visit and re-visit our school values and how these are to be demonstrated each day through their interactions with others. We want boys to recognise resilience, honour and belonging in their relationships, classrooms, the competitive arena, at home, and in the broader community.

Complementing the development of our school’s values, the wellbeing program aims to educate boys in Year 7-12 about significant contemporary topics that impact their lives and the lives of other people. These topics, such as Embracing Diversity, Resolving Conflict, Developing Respectful Relationships, Managing Stress, Celebrating Difference and Making Positive Choices are examined through different lenses significant to each cohort.

Working in the Secondary School

At Ipswich Grammar School Secondary School, graduate teachers begin their careers within a professional and supportive environment that is deliberately structured to support early professional growth. We offer a dedicated Early Career Teacher Program for teachers in their first three (3) years of the profession, providing a formal, well‑designed pathway that supports teachers to build strong curriculum knowledge, expand their behaviour management toolkit, and confidently move from provisional to full registration. Eary Childhood / OSHC

IGS Early Learners is our purpose-built long day care and kindergarten service for children aged 6 weeks to Pre-Prep. Our in-house OSHC service supports Prep to Year 6 students through before school, after school and vacation care programs.

Both services operate within a strong educational framework and are supported by the broader School community.

Our Early Childhood and OSHC services provide flexible and rewarding roles for students and graduates looking to gain practical experience while they study.

Drawing from Ipswich Grammar School’s exceptional performance vision, IGS Early Learners aims to provide an exceptional early learning service for children from 6 weeks of age to Pre Prep.

OSHC

Outside School Hours Care (IGS OSHC), and Vacation Care at Ipswich Grammar School is provided by the school for students from Prep to Year 6. Ipswich Grammar School's Before and After School care operates from 6:15am to 8:30am and from 3pm to 6pm during term time and 6:15am-6pm during school holidays.

At IGS OSHC, children enjoy a fun, learning experience. From exciting activities and healthy, nutritious food, to caring, motivated team members, you can be sure your child is safe and has lots of fun, before or after school.

The centre is located within the Junior School precinct, and the service has access to all school facilities.

We value individuals who bring energy, creativity and a genuine interest in supporting children’s development, wellbeing and engagement beyond the classroom. OSHC is a valuable service for our families, to support their care and work life balance.

To work within IGS OSHC, university students studying Early Childhood, Education, Behavioural Science, Community Services, Health disciplines (including Nursing, Paramedicine, OT and Speech Pathology), Creative Arts, Sport and Recreation or Human Welfare hold relevant qualifications counted as “Qualified” within the industry. OSHC working hours present a flexible schedule for university students, and additional hours are available during vacation periods.

Our undergraduate accounting program offers first, second- or third-year accounting students the opportunity to gain practical, hands‑on experience in management accounting while continuing their university studies. Working two or three days per week, university students will develop strong accounting fundamentals in a real‑world environment, supporting financial decision‑making and building skills that directly complement your academic learning.

You will work alongside experienced finance professionals and be exposed to core management accounting functions, including budgeting support, financial analysis, reporting and cost management. This role is designed to help you understand how accounting information is used within an organisation, moving beyond theory and into practical application.

The position is ideal for students who are motivated, detail‑oriented and eager to develop a strong foundation for a future career in accounting or finance. You will be supported to grow your technical skills, professional confidence and workplace capability, while gaining valuable experience that will strengthen your resume and support your transition into graduate employment.

Undergraduate IT Program

Our undergraduate/graduate IT opportunity is ideal for incoming professionals who want to build a strong foundation in service desk support, combining hands on technical experience with professional, people focused customer service. You will be the friendly first point of contact for day-to-day ICT support, learning how to troubleshoot issues clearly and calmly, communicate with a range of users, and deliver solutions that keep people productive.

Alongside service desk support, you will gain practical experience that underpins the smooth operation of an organisation. This includes supporting new employee set ups such as user accounts, devices and access, assisting with audio visual and meeting room technology, and contributing to IT projects that improve systems and user experience. Extra-Curricular

Undergraduate university students are welcome to participate in coaching at Ipswich Grammar School as part of the Greater Public Schools (GPS) competition, as it provides exceptional real‑world experience that develops leadership capability, coaching expertise, and the management of students and parents in a high‑expectations environment. Coaching within the GPS program enables undergraduates to work alongside experienced staff, lead teams, communicate with families, and support student wellbeing while operating within a structured and professional sporting framework.
