New era for Boarding at Ipswich Grammar School

Thursday 11 June 2026

Ipswich Grammar School has marked a significant milestone in its 163-year history, with the Honourable John-Paul Langbroek MP, Minister for Education and The Arts officially turning the sod on a new $33 million Boarding House that will help shape the future of boarding at Queensland's oldest secondary school.

The project, which forms the first stage of the School's broader Building for the Future initiative, represents the most significant investment in boarding facilities in the School's recent history and reinforces Ipswich Grammar School's long-standing commitment to supporting boys from across Queensland and beyond.

Construction will commence this month following the appointment of Bryant Building Contractors as the successful construction partner for the project. The new Boarding House is scheduled for completion in late 2027 and will welcome its first boarders at the beginning of the 2028 school year.

Minister for Education and the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek said boarders and boarding have been an intrinsic part of Ipswich Grammar School’s history and identity.

“Turning the sod on this project is an important milestone in bringing boarding at Ipswich Grammar School well and truly into the 21st century,” Minister Langbroek said.

“This $33 million project to deliver modern new boarding facilities will benefit the school and its live-in residents for many years to come and the Crisafulli Government is proud to support projects like these through the Capital Assistance Supplementary Scheme.”

Chair of Trustees and Old Boy, Mr David Edwards (Class 1983), said the project was both a continuation of the School's proud heritage and a bold investment in its future.

"Since 1863, boarding has been central to the Ipswich Grammar School story. Generations of boys have called our boarding community home, and this project ensures that future generations will continue to benefit from the unique opportunities, friendships and sense of belonging that boarding provides," Mr Edwards said.

"This new Boarding House represents far more than a building. It is an investment in boys, families and regional communities. It reflects our commitment to providing an exceptional boarding experience while ensuring our facilities meet the needs and expectations of future generations."

The contemporary facility has been designed to support the wellbeing, learning and daily life of boarders while fostering the strong sense of community that has long been a hallmark of boarding at Ipswich Grammar School.

Headmaster and Old Boy, Dr Adam Forsyth (Class 1991), said the development would strengthen the School's ability to support boarding families for decades to come.

"Our boarding community is an integral part of Ipswich Grammar School and has played a vital role in shaping the culture and character of our School for 163 years," Dr Forsyth said.

"While we are proud of our history, we are equally focused on the future. This development reflects our ongoing commitment to investing in the holistic educational experience of our boys and ensuring Ipswich Grammar School remains a leading boarding school for generations to come."

The sod-turning ceremony marks the beginning of a transformative chapter for the School and follows extensive planning and consultation to ensure the new facility meets the evolving needs of boarders and their families.
