Prior to 1985, GPS Basketball consisted of a one day tournament that included an U15 and Open division. The last of these days was held at and won by Ipswich Grammar School.
On this day a group of Basketball coaches/teachers from the competing schools decided to approach the GPS Sportsmasters for permission to run a full GPS Basketball premiership in subsequent years. Permission was granted for a trial GPS Basketball season for 1985 on a home and away basis. The competition initially consisted of an U13, U15 and Firsts divisions.
Ipswich Grammar School was successful in winning this trial premiership with seven wins and no losses (Brisbane Grammar School was the only non-competing school).
1986 was the first official GPS Basketball Premiership. Once again Ipswich Grammar School was the undefeated premiers. This early success was the launching pad for the many successful seasons that followed, with IGS widely recognised as a powerhouse of GPS Basketball.
