Many consider swimming to be a sport for the individual, however, as part of the GPS competition it becomes very much a team sport. Each age group is represented by a team of ten swimmers who compete as individuals but also work together to maximise the performance for the school in their age group. To be selected into the team is considered an honour within the school community as it is recognition of individual ability and a proven commitment to the success of the squad .

The school offers excellent coaching opportunities by two professional swimmers: Dick Orbell and Gary Dovan. Both coaches are ex-Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimmers. Training is offered in a 50m heated pool twice a day, five days a week and complimented by the availability of a fully equipped weights room.

IGS swimming begins from day one of the new school year (though many of our elite swimmers will train all year round) with the inter-house swimming carnival generally being held in the second week of the year. Regular Friday night swim meets are held against other GPS schools in preparation for “The GPS Swimming Championship” held at the beginning of March. Few sporting events can rival the spirit and noise generated at this meet.

Over the years IGS has been highly competitive in swimming and has produced a number of quality swimmers who have gone on to District, State and National representation.

Club swimming is also available to IGS students. The Grammar Swimming Club, organised by our coaches, provides opportunities for boys to be involved in extra swim meets outside of the GPS system.

Coach Dick Orbell says, “The school swim team prides itself on being the best they can be. With the team spirit and the backing of all the boys in the school they often produce some great swims. To be a part of the team is a great honour and you are looked up to as a leader.”
