Every biannual year Ipswich Grammar School, in combination with Ipswich Girls' Grammar School, join forces to produce a School Musical. This is a wonderful opportunity where the students can experience first- hand, the process of bringing a musical from page to stage. The rehearsal period can take up to 4 months and it involves many after school and weekend rehearsals. The students involved are committed and talented individuals who love the experience of performing.

The Ipswich Grammar Musical is performed each biannual year at the Ipswich Civic Hall. Working with professional technical and administrative staff at the theatre, the students are exposed to the daily running of a Theatre – an insightful, real-life experience. The students who become involved in this extra-curricular activity find it very rewarding, gaining knowledge and experience in performance, building self-confidence, developing skills in ensemble work and building a strong rapport with their fellow “cast mates.”

Past musicals have included the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream coat” and “Paris”, the Trojan War epic drama. In 2007, IGS went home- grown with their musical, which was written by Head of English John Acutt. This musical was entitled “Hard-Boiled,” named after the hard boiled detectives of Pulp Fiction and the dark and sinister film noir films of the forties and fifties. In 2009, Ipswich Grammar performed “OLIVER!” the classic tale of a young Orphan searching for love in 19th century London.

Every Musical is unique; a new and exciting opportunity to showcase a different group of talented, versatile performers from Ipswich Grammar and Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School.
